Day 9: Billy Joel vs. Glee

The Challenge: A song that is a bad cover of a great song

What you need to know…

I was a huge fan of Glee in it’s early days. As the show brought on a new cast and a few changes were made, I liked it less – but I was still involved in where the show would go so I kept on watching.

Before too long they took on the amazing Billy Joel. Now, if you’ve read any of my previous posts about music, you know how I feel about Billy Joel and the influence his music has had on my life. So I was super leery when they did a whole episode based on Billy Joel.

Most of the covers Glee did weren’t horrible, but none of them matched up to the original. And after I went through the list of songs that Glee covered in that episode I came up with my answers.

The Answers: An Innocent Man and Just The Way You Are

I can’t quite put my finger on why I don’t care for this cover. But there’s something about the emotion involved and I just don’t think this actor is that great a singer. It falls flat and does nothing for me. His version is actually kind of boring, all things considered.

Just The Way You Are is ‘our’ song and so the way Glee changed it all around was annoying to me. I can appreciate the talent and everything it took to change the song up a bit, but the song didn’t really need it. Some things are better left AS IS.

Maybe I just don’t like a lot of change, and maybe I’m just super partial to the original – but I don’t care. I just don’t think you can compare the 2 versions and have Glee come out on top.

See you back around these parts tomorrow.
